QTC: Representation in Media

OctoberOct 13 2022 15:00 - 16:30

Discussion Group - St. George

This week:

Representation: Content or resent? Let's talk queerness in media!

Open a book, turn on a TV show, and if it was made in the past five years, there’s a fair chance you may find someone like you. That is, someone who shares some social category with you: asexual, Asian, trans. What is “representation,” and what do you think of it? Is there “good representation,” or “bad representation?” How does it make you feel to see people like yourself in media, or not? What’s your favourite show/book/movie right now?? We’ll explore these questions and more in this week’s discussion.

About QTC:

Queer and Trans Connections (QTC) runs Thursdays, 3pm-4:30pm.

QTC is open to all University of Toronto 2SLGBTQ+ and questioning students. This program will provide an opportunity for 2SLGBTQ+ and questioning students to explore identities, look at a range of 2SLGBTQ+ issues through an anti-racist, multi-dimensional lens, share personal and community experiences, examine current events, and connect with peers. Each week will feature a new topic and sometimes a guest facilitator.

No registration required. Meet at the front 21 Sussex Ave (the corner of Sussex Ave and Huron St), where the SGDO is located, and we will walk into the building together. If you are late, please come to the 4th floor of the building. Masks are encouraged for this program, and the SGDO will have some medical masks for those who require.

About the building:

21 Sussex Avenue is called “Sussex Court” on the interactive campus map.

QTC is located on the 4th floor of 21 Sussex Ave. In front of the building, there is a wheelchair lift from the street level (to the left of the stairs when facing the building) to the first floor that requires assistance. Ring the bell and Campus Safety will assist you. If you feel more comfortable, call the SGDO [(416) 946-5624] and we will be happy to assist as needed. From the building's first floor, there is an elevator to the rest of the floors. Touch buttons are available to open the doors on the first four floors of the building.

All washrooms at 21 Sussex are single user, all gender washrooms. They are not deemed accessible.

If you are attending a planned meeting and require accommodation(s) due to disability, please email me directly and I will work with you to make appropriate arrangements.
