U of T Launches Queer Orientation

Queer Orientation: September 19 – 30 on all three campuses

The University of Toronto Sexual & Gender Diversity Office (SGDO) is proud to be working in collaboration with student organizations and University partners* across all three campuses to present Queer Orientation 2013. Building on the active histories of lesbian, gay, bisexual, transgender and queer (LGBTQ) involvement at U of T, this year’s series includes 39 unique events for new and returning students to make connections, engage in activities related to LGBTQ communities and discuss sexual & gender diversity.

Queer Orientation begins at UTM on September 19th with the OUT@UTM Meet-n-Greet, followed on September 20th with all campuses coming together for an informative and interactive LGBTQ-focused tour of the St. George Campus & Church/Wellesley Village. The tour will highlight key hotspots for students today, as well as historical locations that have been integral in LGBTQ movements on campus, in Toronto and across the country.

Annual Queer Orientation highlights will return, including the LGBTOUT Meet & Greet, Queer Women on Campus and SC:OUT Talent Night. This year also includes many new events, such as Comic Books for Justice, Queers of the Court! Dodgeball, Discovering Queer Political Communities panel, UTM’s Queer Town Hall and a Gender Performance Art Tour of the Barnicke Gallery at Hart House. For students interested in discussing how to be an ally, each campus will host an Ally Night on September 24th, an informative, inclusive evening to share knowledge and learn about the significance of allies in working towards equity.

Complete schedule on the new SGDO website

Visit the Queer Orientation page online.

This year’s Queer Orientation schedule is hosted on an interactive events calendar on the newly redesigned SGDO website. This new feature includes options to view the schedule in a calendar format or list, as well as a searchable database with event categories and tags to find events on a specific campus (St. George, UTM, UTSC), or a particular theme (i.e. arts & culture).

The new site is currently in a soft launch, with more information to be added in the coming weeks. Staff, faculty and students are encouraged to provide feedback on the current site and suggestions for new information by contacting the Sexual & Gender Diversity Office. Stay tuned for a broad launch of the new site at the end of October.
