Q21: A Conversation Café – Trans Resilience, Strength & Joy

November 26 @ 3:00 pm - 4:30 pm

As part of the SGDO’s extended programming around Trans Day of Remembrance, Q21 this week will be a reflection on trans resilience and joy. It is important to remember those who we have lost – but at the same time that we look back we must always look forward. Forward to a future filled with solidarity and joy, a future full of thriving trans folks, where the queer community can stand together to defend gender diversity. Let’s get together and chat, let’s be there for each other, and if we have extra time maybe we’ll dismantle gender real quick.

– What does remembrance mean to you?
– What brings you strength in difficult times? What brings you joy?
– What does showing up for the trans community look like?

We are joined by guest facilitator, Heath V. Salazar, who was recently featured as a performer in our “U of T Trans Day of Remembrance: Coming Together in Solidarity” event.

Heath (they/them), also known as drag king Gay Jesus, is a Latinx award-winning multidisciplinary performer and writer. Throughout their career, they’ve worked with a focus on projects that center intersectional forms of queer and trans representation. Heath has gone on to impart elements of their artistic practice as a guest lecturer at both the University of Toronto and Memorial University of Newfoundland. In 2019, they were honored with a nomination from the Inspire Awards for LGBTQ Person of the Year. Currently, Heath is creating new work as an Artist in Residence at Buddies in Bad Times Theatre as well as Aluna Theatre.

Q21 is a weekly conversation café to discuss the questions you want to talk about. Connect with students and guest facilitators as we share our thoughts, experiences and the questions that keep running through our minds. Each week will have a theme, though everyone is welcome to share their ideas and bring questions.

Registration is required. By registering you will be signing up to receive Zoom details for all of the Fall 2020 Q21 weekly sessions. These are drop-in events, so please feel free to join whichever sessions you would like. You can unsubscribe to these emails at any point. For more information, reach out to us at sgdo@utoronto.ca.
