Q21: A Conversation Café – Chosen Family
Thursday, November 28, 2019 @ 3:00 pm - 4:30 pm
This week at Q21 we will be discussing chosen family and the many ways this can look in queer community! We will talk about evolving queer ideas of family, caregiving, partnership and parenthood, and how we can imagine futures for ourselves outside of traditional biological families of origin. We will discuss:
- What comes to mind to you when you think about what chosen family and community looks like? What kind of stories do have you heard, and what kind do you tell?
- What are some practical steps that could be taken to support queer, trans and two-spirit chosen families?
- How do you think we can approach collective responsibility and accountability within and beyond queer and trans chosen families, and these communities more broadly?
Our discussion will be facilitated by Markus ‘Star’ Harwood-Jones. Markus ‘Star’ Harwood-Jones is a white, queer, mad, trans, space-case and day-dreamer, living in Tkaronto.
As an author, illustrator, and film-maker, Star focuses on themes of love, justice, and community. His main artistic works include the all-trans documentary Mosaic, the Confessions of a Teenage Transsexual Whore zine series, and the collection of short stories known as Everything & All At Once. Most recently, Markus has released two young adult novels: Just Julian and Romeo for Real, with support from Lorimer publishing. Markus also works as a public speaker and workshop facilitator, specializing on the topics of gender, sexuality, creative writing, community research, zine making, and performance. In addition, Star sells original art and associated merchandise at craft fairs and the Starkiss Creations storefront. Markus holds a BA in Sociology from Ryerson University, where he was also the co-founder of the RU Trans Collective. Markus/Star also holds an MA in Gender Studies from Queen’s University where he was under the supervision of Dr. Scott Morgensen.
Q21: A Conversation Café is your weekly opportunity to converse and connect with students and guest facilitators about the topics related to LGBTQ+ community. Q21 will take place every Thursday from 3:00 – 4:30 pm. Each week will have a theme and a new guest facilitator.
