Queer & Trans Students of Colour Discussion: Race, Culture & Relationships
January 20 @ 3:30 pm - 5:00 pm
• How does race and culture influence your personal relationships? What are the biggest factors that play into your relationships as a person of colour?
• How have you experienced challenges in your relationships due to religious/cultural differences?
• How do you have open and comfortable conversations that are necessary in order for you and your partner(s) to understand and support each other?
On January 20, we will discuss how our racial and cultural identities affect our personal lives – specifically in the realm of relationships and dating. We will discuss the factors that affect our relationships as people of colour and how our needs may differ based on cultural and racial identities. We will also share stories and strategies for navigating difficult conversations to be had with partners and loved ones.
QTSOC (Queer & Trans Students of Colour) is a monthly discussion group for Black, Indigenous and other racialized UofT community members who identify as LGBTQ, gender non-conforming, two-spirit, third gender and intersex. As a group, we will talk about how the intersections of race, sexuality and gender affect our personal experiences and communities.
New and returning students across all three campuses are invited to meet other people and join in discussions that challenge racism, homophobia and transphobia.
This discussion is organized as part of an ongoing series to invite LGBTQ+ students of colour and students questioning their gender and sexual orientation together to build community and to share stories and new ideas. Come and tell us what you think would help to create more positive spaces and more inclusive conversations!
Snacks will be provided.
