Q21: A Conversation Café – Pronouns
Thursday, October 13, 2016 @ 3:00 pm - 4:30 pm
• What questions do you have about gender-neutral pronoun usage and users that you have always wanted to ask?
• What would make gender-neutral pronoun users more comfortable at U of T and beyond?
• What would help potential allies to learn about and feel comfortable using someone’s gender-neutral pronoun?
Come join the discussion as we explore the world of gender-neutral pronouns! Singular they – using they to refer to one person who does not wish to use she or he pronouns – has been popping up in the mainstream media recently and gathering steam as a discussion topic. But singular they usage is also just a part of everyday life for a growing group of people including (but not limited to) transgender people who identify as non-binary. For singular they users, it can be hard to have others use our pronoun correctly and consistently. And the fear of making a mistake can prevent others from asking questions or trying it out.
This week we’ll be talking all things gender-neutral pronoun-related, from why people use them to how they are used to how people can help users to feel welcome and comfortable. Bring your experiences, thoughts and ideas.
This week’s Q21 will be facilitated by Dr. Lee Airton, founder of the blog They Is My Pronoun (www.theyismypronoun.com), consultant (theyrehere.ca), and lecturer in the Master of Teaching program at OISE/University of Toronto.
LOCATION: Room 421 (Lounge), 21 Sussex Avenue
Q21: A Conversation Café is your weekly opportunity to connect with students and guest facilitators about the topics on our minds. Q21 will take place every Thursday from 3:00 – 4:30 pm. Each week will have a theme and a new guest facilitator.
