Q21: A Conversation Cafe – Creating LGBTQ+ Spaces on Campus
Thursday, November 23, 2017 @ 3:00 pm - 4:30 pm
– How do you understand and engage with the LGBTQ+ community at the University of Toronto?
– If you are involved within LGBTQ+ student clubs and organizations on campus, what does your involvement mean to you? If you are not, what are the barriers that prevent you from accessing the spaces that already exist on campus?
– What are the spaces that do not exist? What are different ways that you can begin to create those spaces on campus?
In this week’s Q21, we will be discussing experiences in spaces outside the university classroom. Getting involved through extracurriculars is a fantastic way to find a community on campus. However, sometimes the existing spaces are not accessible to everyone. We will explore the value of LGBTQ communities on campus, and how to break down barriers that prevent people from participating and being welcomed in those space. We will then work together to discuss possible ways to create spaces on campus that do not exist, in hopes of creating a more inclusive community.
We are being joined by U of T alum, Julian Oliveira, who will be facilitating this conversation!
Julian is currently the LGBTOUT Officer at LGBTOUT, and has been heavily involved within the LGBTQ community at the University of Toronto over the last four years. In this role, Julian supervises the LGBTOUT executive team and ensures LGBTOUT functions as an accessible resource for students. Previously, Julian has worked as the Events Director and Head Director of LGBTOUT, and as a Lead with Pride Co-Chair at the SGDO. When he’s not in these roles, he also performs as drag queen Delia Nyx (a.k.a. Deadly Nightshade).
Q21: A Conversation Café is your weekly opportunity to connect with students and guest facilitators about the topics on our minds. Q21 will take place every Thursday from 3:00 – 4:30 pm. Each week will have a theme and a new guest facilitator.
