Q21: A Conversation Café – Our Bodies in Movement
Thursday, October 20, 2016 @ 3:00 pm - 4:30 pm
– What are some barriers to sports and physical activity that you think are related to body image?
– In what ways do our various communities perpetuate and/ or break down those barriers?
– How can we support ourselves and each other to create more positive spaces for us to be and to stay active? How can we become more body positive?
Regardless of how we identify with sport cultures, our self-perceptions on body image are affected by existing physical cultures, spaces, and our social circles. This week we will take a body positive approach to identifying barriers to sports and physical activity, and explore how we, individually and/or all together, can foster more support and create more comfortable spaces for us to be and stay active in.
This week we’re very excited Christine Hsu to facilitate the discussion. Christine is currently the Sports Inclusion Coordinator and Facilitator at Egale Canada Human Rights Trust. She was the Coordinator, Equity Movement & Move U, working specifically on Move with Pride last year. She is an alumnus from the Faculty of Kinesiology and Physical Education and OISE, with a focus on physical cultural studies, sexual diversity studies and teaching education. She has been very involved with the LGBTQ community, engaging folks in sports, physical activity, and advocating for sports inclusion. Her current community roles include being one of the board of directors of Outsport Toronto and the chair for Flags of Glory, Women’s Division for Toronto Gay Football League.
