Q21: A Conversation Café – Power & Privilege in the Classroom
Thursday, October 27, 2016 @ 3:00 pm - 4:30 pm
– What is it like to be an LGBTQ+ student in the classroom?
– What happens if your values are in conflict with what’s being taught or discussed in class?
– How can students continue to perform and learn when faced with issues like gender binarism or heteronormativity in a classroom setting?
This week at Q21 we will be exploring how the power relations within a classroom – between professors and students, between students, and between students and curricula – might impact learning among LGBTQ+ students. Join us for a discussion on the intersections of queer and trans identity and academic success at U of T – especially in light of the on-campus discussions about academic freedom over the past few years.
We’re excited to welcome Rahul Bhat to facilitate this week’s Q21. Rahul has been involved with the SGDO for many years and is currently a Learning Strategist at U of T’s Academic Success Centre.
LOCATION: Room 421 (Lounge), 21 Sussex Avenue
