Q21: A Conversation Café – What’s in a Name?

February 15 @ 3:00 pm - 4:30 pm

– How can labels be empowering, and do they feel restricting at times? In which contexts do we find labels useful, and when do we feel them to be limiting or reductive of our true sense of selves?

– How do you think people perceive your label and is that how you want to be seen?

– Where do we find the words that helps us express ourselves, and how do those words change in different spaces, around different people, and over time?

This week in Q21, we will explore our relationship to labels, and the ways in which they might empower us, give us the words to express ourselves, or perhaps even feel limiting when they do not encapsulate our full identities. Folks will have the chance to discuss how labels are found, the ways in which they might change, and the contexts in which they do change. We will also talk about how labels help us find community, especially since the ever-growing vastness of the LGBTQ2S+ community can be difficult to navigate.

Overall, the discussion will be a space where folks can share thoughts and feelings about the relationship between labels and identity, but as a friendly reminder, no one is expected to disclose any information about themselves or their identities throughout the conversation if they are not comfortable doing so. Looking forward to seeing you there!

We are very excited to have this conversation facilitated by Mahfam Nikoo, the Q21 Program Assistant! Mahfam is a second year student at the University of Toronto, studying Neuroscience, Psychology, and Sexual Diversity Studies. She is passionate about creating spaces for LGBTQ2S+ students to learn, share, build community, and at the end of the day, also just have fun! In her free time she enjoys writing poetry, and released her first book, The First Nameless Colour, in May 2016. She hopes to release her second book, Knots, in late 2018. Mahfam loves astrology, painting, dancing, laughing with the people she loves, watching (hilariously bad) queer movies with her best friend, going to fancy restaurants, and daydreaming on the subway. She hopes to one day have a side career as a queer wedding planner.

Q21: A Conversation Café is your weekly opportunity to connect with students and guest facilitators about the topics on our minds. Q21 will take place every Thursday from 3:00 – 4:30 pm. Each week will have a theme and a new guest facilitator.

Be part of the discussion.
