Q21: A Conversation Café – LGBTQ+ Reconciliation
Thursday, March 2, 2017 @ 3:00 pm - 4:30 pm
– Have you taken the time to look at the report from the U of T TRC Steering Committee (available here: https://www.utoronto.ca/news/truth-and-reconciliation-u-t)? If so, what were your initial thoughts on it?
– What does the idea of reconciliation mean to you?
– What does it mean to be an ally and how can we work to implement the concept of “decolonial love” across all of our communities?
With the release of “Answering the Call: Wecheehetowin”, the University of Toronto Steering Committee Truth and Reconciliation Commission report in January 2017, there has been an increased focus on how to Indigenize the University of Toronto at all divisions and levels.
Given the often shared histories of colonization and the oppression and marginalization of LBGTQ2A+ this Q21 will explore questions around how members of the Queer community can work to support the work of decolonizing and Indigenizing our collective spaces. Things to consider will be what are the differences and limitations of a decolonial approach vs. Indigenization? What are your responsibilities given your social location on Turtle Island (Indigenous person, settler, immigrant etc) and how can you better support the cause of Indigenous rights?
We are excited to welcome Seán to facilitate this week’s conversation. Seán is a Queer/Two-Spirit (nêhithaw/nêhiyaw (Woods/Plains Cree)/ Nakawé (Saulteaux)/otipemisiwak (Métis)/Irish) urban Indigenous person who was born, lives and works on the territory traditionally known as Tkaronto.
LOCATION: Room 421 (Lounge), 21 Sussex Avenue
Q21: A Conversation Café is your weekly opportunity to connect with students and guest facilitators about the topics on our minds. Q21 will take place every Thursday from 3:00 – 4:30 pm. Each week will have a theme and a new guest facilitator.
