Outside the Box: Creating Safer Spaces in Unsafe Environments
November 15 @ 1:00 pm - 2:30 pm
– What are some strategies we can use to protect ourselves from gender, sexuality and race based violence?
– How to support each other when we see our peers in trouble?
– What if we can’t find gender neutral washrooms near us?
As much as we are constantly striving to create safer spaces in our communities, we unfortunately still find ourselves with people and situations that may be less than ideal. Sometimes, we also end up witnessing situations that require our immediate intervention and well-thought-out strategies. As queer people we must practice self care and protect ourselves and each other, so that we can continue doing all the amazing work we are doing. This week we will be discussing strategies in “creating safer spaces in unsafe environments”. We will look into sharing personal experiences, assertiveness techniques, bystander intervention strategies, and ways to support each other – in anywhere from bathrooms to work places to classrooms, and think of ways we can collectively deescalate gender, sexuality, race based aggression.
This week we are excited to welcome Robbie Ahmed to facilitate this conversation. Robbie is transman of colour. His previous work was in running support programs and resources for queer South Asian youth, providing academic support for marginalized students hoping to go back to college, and advocating for culturally appropriate mental health services. He is no stranger to escaping rough situations having to come out in countries like Russia, Saudi Arabia, and Bangladesh where he grew up, and would love to share and discuss ways we can support each other.
Outside the Box is a UTSC lunch and conversation series to bring students together every other Wednesday from 1:00 – 2:30 pm. Find out more about Outside the Box.
This event is hosted by the UTSC Department of Student Life, the Sexual & Gender Diversity Office, and the UTSC Women & Trans Centre.
